Laundry

Observations about laundry Best Practices protocol include:

1)  Dryer sheets are stinky, noxious and toxic.  That is our opinionated viewpoint.  To back that up scientifically, the perfumes and other chemicals used in dryer sheets are harsh, pretty strong (is that redundant?), have been cited in multiple studies as toxic, and identified as triggers in chemically sensitive individuals.

2)  It is illogical to put a lot of effort into keeping a house cool in the summer, when temperatures are in the 80's, 90's, and now (thanks to rapid global climate change), 100's, and then heat up a little metal box to over 100F to dry your clothing when, right outside, it is blisteringly hot.  This is our observation.

3)  Some detergents are also harsh and strong smelling.  Others are unscented, more on the natural side, and waaayyyy less objectionable by those who ...are observant and think critically.  How can it be good for you if it's not good for the planet?  Seriously.

4)  There are multiple natural options which can be made easily at home or purchased inexpensively.

5)  When the lid remains down on the washing machine between uses, it can get musty and smell... well; not attractive.

6)  The dryer lint filter needs, needs, needs emptied after each and every dryer use.  Dryer lint is a common cause of house fires.

Solutions:

  • Dry clothing outside!  If needed, "fluff" them in the dryer for 10 mins to soften.
  • Try "laundry balls", a different approach to eliminating static cling (there are a couple in the laundry room).
  • Look for DIY natural recipes on the internet.  The one I found uses vinegar and essential oil on cloth napkins, which are promised not to smell like italian salad dressing.  We haven't tried it, because we dry our clothing outside year round (and finish them off in front of the woodstove in the winter).
  • Leave the lid to the washer up between uses

  • Please, no matter where you live, get in the habit of checking the lint filter *before* *and* *after* each and every dryer use.  You can not go wrong this way!

Thank you!
